Family Social at Apple Creek on Sunday, September 20
Jefferson City West Rotary hosts its first social event of the fiscal year on Sunday, September 20, a family outing at Apple Creek Farm off U.S. 50 West near Centertown, starting at 3 p.m. All club members, spouses, children and grand-children are invited.
Jason Call said swimming, touch football, volleyball, horseshoes and other family activities are planned. The club has contracted with Bandana's BBQ to provide the food - main dish, side dishes, etc. Bernie Fechtel of Fechtel Beverage will provide beer and Carl Vogel will provide soft drinks.
There is no cost to Rotarians and their families to attend. But reservations are needed by Sept. 18. More than 45 had already signed up to attend. If you haven't made your reservations, contact Jason at his office or home, or by e-mail.
Here's how to get to Apple Creek Farm: Go west on U.S. Hwy. 50, 4.5 miles west of St. Martins (or 4.5 miles past State Highways T & D); exit left to Murphy Ford Road; then go south on Murphy Ford Road for 1.2 miles. The entrance will be on your right.
Two more members inducted

Two new members were inducted as Jefferson City West Rotarians at the club's September 11 meeting. They were Jon Wilson, Boy Scout executive of the Five Rivers District, and Stephanie Johnson, executive director of the Mid-Missouri March of Dimes organization. Pictured from left to right are: Larry Neill (sponsor), Jon Wilson, Stephanie Johnson and George Welling (sponsor). The total club membership is now 76.
Old Civil War Flag

Linda Endersby, assistant director of the Missouri State Museum, shows off one of the many Civil War battle flags that flew over Missouri during that conflict. The flag was from the 2d Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery. Endersby gave JC West Rotarians a visual tour of the state exhibits now in the State Capitol, and noted that a special exhibit is being planned in 2010 which will be the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Missouri (if you don't count a little skirmish with Kansas years before). Missouri was the only state to be represented by both the North and South, and as the result ranked third among all states in the number of Civil War battles from 1860 through 1865.
Student of the Month
Adriel Hawkins, a senior at Jefferson City High School, was introduced at our September 11 meeting as our first Student of the Month honoree. Adriel is president of the Student Council, and active at JCHS in orchestra, track and basketball. He is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to attend either Georgia Tech or the University of Missouri at Kansas City after graduation.
Upcoming Programs

Sept. 25 - Mark Schreiber, Update on the Old Prison Project.
