Jefferson City West hosts USS Jefferson City crew

There is a saying among U.S. Navy submariners that says "Pride Runs Deep." The Jefferson City West Rotary Club returned the honor, taking great pride in hosting and commemorating the officers and crew of the USS Jefferson City, a nuclear submarine named for our city and based in San Diego.

Club President Steve Houser presented Captain Ed Anderson, commander of the USS Jefferson City, with a club flag and thanks to its crew for keeping our country free.

Some eight members of the submarine, smartly dressed in their white uniforms, were guests of the Rotary club on August 21. There were making a goodwill visit of their sub's namesake city, in which they also helped do community work including working on a Habitat for Humanity house, and making appearances at Jefferson City High School and the American Legion.

The visiting crew members were sailors who had performed well while undergoing intense 16-hours-a-day preparations for their upcoming Navy mission to the Middle East. They represented a cross-section of high-skilled jobs in the areas of electricity, engineering and maintenance.

Family social planned for September 20

Jefferson City West Rotary is planning its first social event of the fiscal year on Sunday, September 20, a family outing at Apple Creek Farm off U.S. 50 West near Centertown. All club members, spouses, children and grand-children are invited.

Jason Call said swimming and other family activities are planned. The club will provide the main course and Rotarians are asked to bring a side dish, including desserts. Refreshments will also be provided by the club.

Members are asked to sign up indicating how many of their family will be attending, or they can contact Jason at his office or home, or by e-mail.
